"Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast," the 12-minute opus that ends the album, does the same thing, floating for several minutes before ending on a drawn-out jam that finally gets the piece moving. Of these, Waters begins developing the voice that made him the group's lead songwriter during their classic era with "If," while Wright has an appealingly mannered, very English psychedelic fantasia on "Summer 68," and Gilmour's "Fat Old Sun" meanders quietly before ending with a guitar workout that leaves no impression. Then, on the second side, Roger Waters, David Gilmour, and Rick Wright have a song apiece, winding up with the group composition "Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast" wrapping it up. Still, it may be an acquired taste even for fans, especially since it kicks off with a side-long, 23-minute extended orchestral piece that may not seem to head anywhere, but is often intriguing, more in what it suggests than what it achieves. If anything, this is the most impenetrable album Pink Floyd released while on Harvest, which also makes it one of the most interesting of the era. Contractors may be just as tempted to offer discounts if you pay in cash and promise to keep quiet about it. Moving the tax from an income tax to a sales tax may or may not change this dynamic. This is distinct from illegal economic activity. Currently unreported income in the United States is estimated to be about $2 trillion. Every dollar spent would be treated the same for tax purposes. With a sales tax, one year of extraordinary spending would at least be taxed at a flat rather than a progressive rate. For example, selling a house in California is the easiest way to be part of the top 1% and get hit with tremendous taxes. Many economic incidents can artificially inflate your income for a single year, pushing you into the highest tax bracket. One benefit of eliminating a progressive income tax is that it can accidentally tax people it doesn't intend to burden. Increased savings and investing help create a healthy country with better economic growth. And because a sales tax is a consumption tax, more people will defer consumption and have capital to invest instead. Families will be encouraged to have capital to save and invest as the tax burdens are removed on investments.ĭeferred consumption, money not spent, is the textbook definition of capital. Less demand for consumer goods will reduce prices and also consumer debt. Taxing consumption will similarly decrease spending. And it is easy to make the case that how rich you live should determine how much you should be taxed. You can argue that your lifestyle spending-lavish or frugal-is at least a measure of how rich you live. If you use dollars spent as your measure of rich, the tax is fair and exactly proportional so those who spend more pay more.Ĭlaims of "fair" or even "regressive" or "progressive" depend very much on what is used as the denominator. A flat sales tax is exactly in proportion to this third factor, a lavish consumer lifestyle. These are three very different measures of rich: accumulated wealth, annual production and consumer lifestyle. He said he also chaired efforts on the Middlesex Township comprehensive plan and is a former member of the Saxonburg sewer authority board. McMaster, 69, is a past chairman of both the township zoning hearing board and board of supervisors, which he served on for six years. Perhaps, newcomer isn't the best description of McMaster, who lives in the township with his wife, Beth. Incumbent Donald Marshall and newcomer David McMaster are both filed as Republicans. Two candidates are vying for a seat at the Middlesex Township supervisor table May 18. |
